Nothing Came

I made sure I tied up loose ends.
Closed open conversations.
Shut unlocked doors.
I wanted to be sure I
Made room for something.

And nothing came.

I burned sage. Incense.
Leaves and trees.
Confessed at the altar.
Affirmed. Released. Prayed.
Traded away karmic debt
Just to be ready for
something.

And nothing came.

I broke my own heart.
Slashed my own wrists.
Bled tears in silence
For an invisible love,
Making room for maybe one
I could love out loud.

Still, nothing came.

And, oh?

Wait.

Is something coming?

Never mind.

Still.

Nothing came.
